Lanterns glowed in the Hearthkin’s windows. Laughter drifted across the winds as the aurora swirled and the veil increasingly shimmered as the end of October neared.

Then, the laughter suddenly stopped. Something has come through the veil, and the spirits are afraid.

As Jynx and I wandered the valley, enjoying the cool breezes and the crunchy, toasty leaves. When we entered the valley and walked by a stand of Quilleaf trees, spirits flashed by and settled amongst the tree roots. Fast and hushed whispers rose and drifted from the air towards us. Near the edge of the forest, glowing mysterious footprints led down to the river.

I shivered. The air felt thick and heavy. I knew something was horribly wrong. What was happening.

Lykie, you don’t want to know! Jynx’s eyes grew cobalt and his tail flicked as he stared into the darkness.

The mystery continues on YouTube.

Something Came Through the Veil.

When the veil goes thin, spirits flock to Erudus. Many come to visit old family and to seek out friends. Some sing, some dance, and some ride Leaf Whisper horses across the Pampas.

Spirits who once practice magic gather together to perform old rituals under the light of the twin moons. To the north, where the snow always lives, it is rumoured that past masters of magic gather. They raise their voices in chants and spells, before disappearing back to the veil. Erudians believe that it is this power that allows the aurora to be seen all year round.

But there are those who come through the veil for other reasons. They do not bring mischief. They do not bring pranks. What they bring is much darker.

One night, just past the middle of October, it was dark, and Lyna and Astra were shining high above. The spirits were especially busy milling about Erudus, so Jynx went for a walk to the gate to watch. Somehow, he knows that something dark is about to come through.

No one including Angelika, totally understands Jynx. Except maybe a small boy named Tobias Moonglenn. Tobias was Angelika’s baby brother and he was special. Toby saw more than anyone realized and the visions in his dreams always came true.

One day, Toby saw that Angelika would need someone to help her soon. He made his friend Jynx promise he’d help her.

Jynx kept his promise. He traveled to Erudus to wait for Angelika and when she arrived, he became her companion.

What Jynx didn’t understand when he made his promise to Toby, was that Toby was helping Jynx find the companionship that he would need in the future.

This week’s YouTube story takes us into Jynx’s past, where a young boy, a promise, and heartbreak, explain why Jynx chose to follow Angelika into the unknown.

Watch the video below and discover the story behind Jynx’s promise.

When meteors race through the Erudian sky and fall onto the planet, some special stones can contain magic.

It’s the weekend and Angelika once again made her way through the gate to my home in Northwestern Ontario.

It was only 5:30 in the morning when a rapping came on the back deck door.

“Susan, hurry! The Sky Shard trail has come!” Angelika’s eyes began to glow as she raised her hands and turned the lock. She burst through and jumped on my bed. Jynx followed, yawning as he walked through the curtains and nosed his way under my blanket.

I sighed and followed Angelika outside. She raced around the corner of the building and whistled. I followed and slid to a halt. In between the Aurora Wisps and the Veil a trail of Sky Shards was now glowing.

Sky shards come from meteors that crash onto Erudus. They are magical rocks that glow and shine, particularly during the Celebration of Spirits. The three main types that masters use in spells are Aubergine, Moss and Indigo.

Aubergine sky shards are used in Spells for ⁕ Insight ⁕ Intuition ⁕ Hidden Truths ⁕

Moss sky shards are used in Spells for ⁕ Luck ⁕ Love ⁕ Omens ⁕

Indigo sky shards are used in Spells for ⁕ Quiet Sight ⁕ Connection ⁕ Calming the Mind ⁕

The Sky Shard trail came to my garden this weekend. It is filled with glowing rocks that can be seen from the road.

The rocks are just some old stones from around the yard. My dogs love to dig them and toss them around. I take them away and put them in piles, so they came useful in this project.

I took the stones and spray painted them in layers of purple, green, and glowing yellow. I had some old black spray paint as well, and I lightly sprayed the tops, just to blend the colors. During the day, the rocks are still visible and colorful, and look otherworldly.

I found some glow in the dark paint powder online. I mixed it with some clear spray and then painted it randomly around the rocks. I used several colours. When I pointed a black light at the rocks they glowed as in the pictures below.

I also painted some signs. They certainly aren’t professional, but they’re unique, and after all, its all fun and nonsense.

When looking at the display, I realized the black light needs to be redirected a bit, and I have another unused black light, so I might add it to the display.

Stay tuned for the final adjustments on Halloween night.

Arboria Greenroot, the Great Mother of the Quilleaf forest scratched her head as she examined the roots of a nearby Skysong willow. The roots looked healthy enough, they were gnarled, twisted and flying Widoweeds chattered as they nested underneath. It was like the rest, they all looked normal.

No one else in the forest knew the trees well enough, to understand that someone had stolen some of their ancient memories. Not important memories, just small memories of flying squirrels battling for a nest, thoughts of an opening moon flower just before sunrise, or the remembrance of the odour of the Mother tree’s perfume as she released her seeds to a warm wind.

Worst of all, the trees were starting to forget Arboria’s chanting spells to help the young seedlings grow. Everywhere throughout the forest, the trees were sending messages through their roots, and rustling their leaves in a chorus.

As Arboria wandered through the forest, one of the largest Quilleafs called to her. “Mother, you must help us! I’ve forgotten something amusing and annoying. I don’t remember what it was, but I’m sure I once knew it.

The Sombre Survivor, basking in the heightened sound of the forest, cleared his throat. “I’ve lost my leaves, Great Mother. I don’t remember when I last saw them.

As Arboria was listening to her friends, a soft chuckle traveled from the deepest darkes part of the forest. It continued to laugh, as more and more of the trees talked about what they thought they’d lost.

Arboria was worried. If the Sombre Survivor couldn’t remember that his leaves were so small that even he couldn’t see them, than the situation was worse than she thought. And the Quilleaf, he was always making up stories, she wasn’t sure if the tree lost anything, but she needed to find out.

Arboria told the trees that she would investigate and walked towards the deep forest. She past the gathering place, where she had been initiated into the Great Mother Tree’s mind, and she walked past the dark hole where Midan, the cranky leaf fox lived.

When she reached the area of the forest where creatures would not go, it was so quiet, she could feel her blood as it flowed through her veins. She quietly focused her thoughts and connected with the few shrubs that still survived here, looking for whoeverwas laughing.

She heard a rustle in hollowed out tree trunk, and she peered into the darkness. Her eyes adjusted, showing her thousands of tiny glowing spheres. Inside each orb, images moved silently. Each orb contained one stolen memory.

Arboria crossed her arms in front of her and in a sharp voice called, “Memory spirit, I don’t care if it is the time of year for the Celebration of Spirits, you cannot steal the trees memories.

The tiny spirit’s wings shimmered with cobalt as it moved closer to Arboria. “I… I wanted to remember what happiness, and being part of a family was like.

The spirit ducked back in the hollow and hid its face from the Great Mother.

Arboria’s face softened as she looked at the tiny spirit. She studied it for several moments, waiting for it to look at her again.

It had been many sols since Arboria had seen one of the Memory Spirits in the forest. The Memmers, as they were once called, once lived freely amongst her people, and her men and women used to freely offer happy memories to the tiny ghosts. But, as suspicions between people on Erudus grew, her people no longer offered their thoughts freely, even to the Memmers. The memory spirit just wanted to belong again. It was lonely.

“Come, little Memmer, come with me back to my home.” She waited while the spirit came out of the hollow and began to follow her. It’s head was held low, and it trailed behind.

When Arboria reached the Quilleaf gathering place, she sang one pure note, calling the forest together.

“My family, this young Memmer has been taking your memories. None of you have been sharing anything lately, and she is all alone. Consider offering her a new memory, as she releases the ones she stole.

The memory spirit’s form changed form alabaster to a rosy pink. It lowered its head ever further as it closed its eyes, hundreds of tiny lights rose upwards. They floated around the clearing and stopped above each tree. As the old memory entered a tree’s branches the tips of the tree’s leaves glowed silver. Each tree in the forest breathed in the memory and then exhaled a new joyous thought for the little Memmer.

After each tree had given the spirit a memory, Arboria raised her arms, showing herself years before. She gathered forest spirits and singing off key. Her singing was so horrible, that a young boy began to cry. “Don’t kill us Great Mother, we love you!”

At first the trees stood in silence, Then some of the saplings began to chuckle, and then one of the willows. Soon, warm laughter filled the forest. With each chuckle, the Memmer glowed brighter.

Arboria realized that although she had spent centuries hiding that memory, her shoulders somehow felt looser now everyone knew what had happened

From that day forward, the Quilleaf people began remembering the joy of the previous year. One night, during the Celebration of Spirits, a gathering is called where the trees sing, dance and talk of their happy memories, and they welcome the Memmer’s each year.

Brynn fingered the harness that his partner Ignis had lovingly threaded together out of strips she had peeled from an Ashcon tree, and metal from the mines in the Spinebacks. The halter glinted, as he softly placed it over Eterness’ buttery soft neck, and bound the straps around her nose.

Brynn thought about his woman. Ignis had been such a good addition to the Dragon Ryders. He had been right to lure her from the Southern Dragon Bank. If she could only understand that his spoofs hurt no one. But then, she’d understand, eventually.

Eterness pushed her long nose into Brynn’s chest and snorted, perfuming the air with the scent of char and earth. Brynn grinned as he stroked the long strip of cartieledge along her nose. “Firm but pliable, just as it should be. You’ve healed well, Doddie. The broken bones are gone.”

Eterness snorted, raised her eyes and flapped her translucent purple and amber wings. She leaned into Brynn’s touch and then suddenly began to twitch violently.

“Eterness…Doddie… what’s wrong?” Brynn began examining the dragon’s head looking for further injury. From beneath Eterness’ strong wings, a purple mass with glowing yellow eyes flew up and sat on the tip of Eterness’s nose.

A small sound, like a bird cooing, erupted from it. It grew louder until Brynn recognized the sound as a chuckle. Brynn squinted and looked closer at the object. He jumped back and began fingering his dragon tooth necklace.

“Doddie, it’s a spirit.” Brynn held up two fingers and then crossed them. “Be gone! This be a place for the dragons. Not for the dead!”

The spirit’s eyes turned toward Brynn. They glinted and danced in the sunlight as the spirit zoomed downwards to Eterness’ back. It disappeared behind her and Eterness began to flap her wings. She snapped her huge head towards her back, knocking Brynn down onto the hot stone beside her.

Eterness began to sneeze repeatedly.

HHHAAATCHI!

HHHAAATCHI!

HHHAAATCHI!

A shower of harmless gold sparks flew through the air and around the dragon den. As she continued to sneeze, sparks flew to three small lanterns that had been placed in the corner for the Spirit Ceremony. Their flames lit, sending a warm glow across the cave.

“Ignis is not going to be kind. The lanterns shouldn’t be lit from three hours.” Brynn’s long hair flapped in the hot stale air, as he zipped around Eterness trying to catch the spirit.

The spirit giggled loudly, and whistled in a high voice that was higher than a squeal of a lava rat who was eating tube roots.

Four more spirits zoomed into the room. They zipped around Eterness and began tickling her feet, her tail, her back, and her chest. Eterness hissed and screeched. She opened her mouth, her pointy teeth snapping together quickly as her dragon breath sparked orange sparks at the spirits. Her eyes glowed pumpkin as small strands of zazzymane grass near her began to smoke.

Brynn stomped on the grass until the smoke dissipated. He reached forward and tried to grab one of the spirits, but it zipped sideways and around him. It chortled behind him, grabbed his hair and pulled.

“By my foul universe!” Brynn pulled his hair away. He reached out and tried to catch two spirits this time, but they dashed away and floated above one of the dragon hatching pods. The spirits jumped haphazardly up and down,as they shrieked.

From behind, the smallest spirit hurtled towards Eterness’ thick chest. If flew upward and began tickling underneath her chin.

Eterness roared so loudly that a weak stalactite began to vibrate and crack.

CCCRRRIICCKKK

CREEEECCKKK

KAABOMMM

The stalagtite dropped to the floor as Eterness’ eyes popped wide and glowed crimson. She took a breath from deep in her chest.

“Eterness, wait!” Bryn dived behind a boulder, lowered his body to the floor, and pulled his hands over his head.

Eterness sneezed and roared, sending sparks of crimson flame towards the spirits. Wind from the flame circled around the cavern sending Brynn’s boots into the bathing pool, empty dragon shells onto the walking paths, and pulling bats from the ceiling and dropping them onto the floor where they lay dazed. A sour smell of char mixed with egg fluid, and rank water filled the cavern.

“Eterness, Doddie, are you well?” Brynn stood and raised his hand in front of him. He pushed his way through the smoke towards where Eterness had been.

When the smoke finally cleared the spirits had disappeared, leaving nothing but a strange lime goo on the rocks around the dragon. She had one of the empty eggs hanging from one of her horns, and her eyes flashed from pumpkin to crimson to black repeatedly. Her wings were raised to the sky and her head was moving quickly back and forth.

A small woman with long black hair, and a tattoo of the mountains as red as the lava, walked in. Ignnis’ eyes bore into Brynn’s face. “Who took down the sign? Brynn, was it you?”

“No, Ignis. I wouldn’t.” Brynn grinned at Ignis. He turned his body away from her and ran his hand slowly through his hair.

Ignis took a sign from under her arm and raised it above the entrance. She pounded it into the rock. “Brynn, it says NEVER TICKLE A DRAGON! Do you understand?”

“But Ignis … I didn’t.” Brynn held his arms out to the side as he looked towards Eterness to defend him. But, Eterness’ eyes were still dodging around the cavern.

“NEVER, Brynn. NEVER, ESPECIALLY DURING THE CELEBRATION OF SPIRITS!" Got it?” Ignis looked towards Eterness, who was trying to remove the shell from her horn unsuccessefully. “And help Eterness out.”

“Ignis…”

Ignis stomped out of the cave ignoring Brynn. Five purple spirits swooped into the cave’s opening just as Ignis left. They floated upwards and laughed loudly. Suddenly, they rose as if choreographed, and flew upwards into the aurora where they dissipated.

Brynn sighed. It was going to be a long day. He turned towards Eterness. “Come, Doddie. I’ll take the shell off…”

Eterness was now lying on the stone snoring and huffing. One wing was tucked under her chin. The shell swung back and forth as she breathed in and out.

From behind a boulder green goo began to trickle across the floor and a tiny giggle came.

“Universe!” Brynn sighed and moved towards his dragon. “Spirits, the rule is you never, ever tickle a dragon!”

The sound stopped. Could they have actually listened>?

Then, near the goo, a broken voice whispered, “What about her nose?”

Brynn groaned and thought, how many days until the Celebration of Spirits is over?

Definition - Phantom Fox - A frost-grey fox that has a silver patch around its throat and a long furry tail with a white tip. During October, it seeks out one Erudian, carrying a message from someone who has died. She speaks in the spirits voice, gives the individual his message, but does not know what the message is about, or where it came from.

Jynx and I were walking through the Spin Hearth towards the echo chambers, hopefully to crash our heads down to our beds to sleep. It was already moon wake and I had been up for several brights. My back ached, and my eyes scratched and drooped, as I tripped my way up the uneven path.

The lantern-lighting ceremony at the Quarry Hearth had gone later than I had expected. The music had not begun until late, and the glowy tube pies were especially crumbly today. I ate seven pies, and after I drank a mugful of the local rock sweet and spicy smelling rock cider, my stomach felt like meady bugs were dancing in my gut.

I heard in my head, Own fault! Jynx glared at me for several moments and then raised his nose and sniffed the air. His head swiveled towards some of the silver veined boulders at the edge of our trail. Through the gleam of the minerals, I could not see anything.

I groaned and pressed my hand against my stomach. Jynx was right, I had enough food on Erudus, I needed to learn to eat less treats. The locals were always there to feed me.

I quickened my pace to catch up with Jynx, as I saw him dart off the mountain path and stop at a small cliff wall. His glowing blue eyes gazed up towards a small waterfall that dripped downwards to us. Jynx’s tail quickly twitched as the hair on his head rose.

Sitting near the water was a phantom fox. It’s silver throat and misty eyes glowed pale blue In the darkness. When it saw us approaching, it did not flee, instead its tiny feet splashed in the water as it came towards us.

The tips of my mouth moved upwards even though I tried to hide my smile from Jynx. At the sight of the animal his eyes had narrowed and he had begun to pace.

From nowhere I heard, in a familiar, husky voice that was as strong as the mountain itself say, “you are not responsible, my dragonling.”

I looked around for the speaker even though my powers told me that the Phantom fox was speaking. But deep down, I knew it was someone else.

The fox came closer and then opened her mouth again. “You are not responsible, my dragonling.”

The phantom chirped in its normal voice and then slunk away around the rocks and disappeared into a small fissure in the wall.

Later, I tried not to think about the encounter that night. After all, the Celebration of Spirits had begun, and ever since I had come to Erudus, I had realized very quickly that anything could happen when the veil thinned. But, the fox’s voice creeped into my mind all evening.

The next morning, I wandered down to Serai and Keefee’s hearth for morning glub and a chat. Keefee was busy repairing his flask with chalk ground from the rock of the bindei rock. When he saw me his face softened.

“Good day, Lika. May the mountain bless you with strength. Sit, have some glub.” Keefee tried to pour a mug of the glub, but chalk was stuck to his flask, and when he raised his hand, the flask came with it.

Serai laughed. “Hello, little Star. Keefee insists on trying to fix that old flask. He needs a new one.” She patted Keefee on his shoulder and then poured me a mug of the tangy floral scented liquid.

I drank my glub and listened to the pair discuss the gossip from last evening. When they were done, I told them about the phantom fox. They looked at each other, resting their eyes together for a moment and in unison sat back in their chairs.

“It sounds like Silverthroat found you.” Keefee picked up a towel and pulled the flask away from his hand. He dropped it onto the cloth on the table without removing his eyes from me.

“Angelika… Silverthroat wanders the mountains at this time of the sol to help the living and the dead. She… she brings messages from beloved family members. But…” Keefee shared another glance with Serai. “ we’ve never heard you talk about your family.”

My heart skipped. My fingers fumbled around the lip of my mug. There was an empty chair beside me. For a moment I saw little Toby there, dipping crumbly cookies into his mug, laughing when the tip dropped inside with a plop.

From the couch, where Jynx had jumped up before Serai could shoo him off, I felt a slip of power traveling towards me. Then I felt him in my head. “Fox give no name. Look good. Good for Jynx’s lunch.” Drool began to drip down his fangs.

I sighed and silently answered him. Absolutely not!

Jynx need eat. Hungry! Jynx narrowed his eyes as he looked at me.

If you eat much more I’ll have to get a dragon to get you down the mountain. “Serai, do you have any more glub.” I held out my cup and waited.

“Lyka, look at me.” Keefee became incredibly quiet. “Silverthroat never lies. Sometimes, the messages she gives are hurtful, but usually they are helpful. Ginba, from the Runner Hearth, was worried her daughter suffered in the avalanche that killed her. Silverthroat’s message helped her get peace.” Keefee reached out for one of Serai’s pastries.

Serai looked deep into my eyes. “Maybe, you should listen to Silverthroat.”

I lowered my eyes. We sat in silence for a long time until I cleared my throat. “I don’t think I can do that right now. Serai, could I please have more glub.” I head out my mug, with my head lowered, forcing the power of tears away from me.

Serai picked up the pitcher. “Of course, little star. Keefee and I will always try to give you anything you need.”

I managed to leave Keefee and Serai’s hearth soon after that, and they did not question me further. Instead, memories and faces flashed through my head. Fragments of conversations, snippets of stories, and notes of music were all jumbled into one.

By the time I reached my next stop, my back ached, and my head ached. But, when I saw Lurni, I forced myself to stand high, and plastered a smile on my face.

I walked up to Lurni who was standing in her dim and densely packed workshop. Lurni was a small woman who, even though she was missing her right thumb, built the most extraordinary lanterns. I had commissioned her that year to build my very own lantern.

“Hello, Angelika! I’ve finished you’re lantern. It’ll be a wonderful addition to the final lighting ceremony,” Lurni reached out and pulled a soft hair cloth off a wooden box. Gleaming underneath was a silver and cobalt lantern with touches of amethyst.

I smiled. Adorning the nearest side was an image of Jynx. Lurni had captured Jynx’s smug look perfectly.

At the sight of the lantern Jynx’s ears perked up. He came forward to inspect. Acceptable image. Not perfect. Jynx, perfect! Jynx raised his paw up to Lurni to indicate he accepted her work.

Lurni’s cheeks turned pink as she giggled. “He’s so cute.” She looked into my face. Her bright smiled dropped and her head tilted. “What’s wrong, Angelika?”

“Nothing, Lurni. I’m just thinking of the past, that’s all… and sometimes it’s painful.” I fumbled with my mother’s old bracelet, fingering the facets of one of the stones.

Lurni studied my face and then shrugged. “You’re right, Angelika, remembering sometimes hurts. When I remember my gram, I regret that we argued just before she died, but I can’t apologize… or bring her back. I wish I could.”

Lurni reached over and began polishing some nearby steel. “I would love to hear something, anything from her. I’m afraid she hates me... but even if she does, I would now know, and then my thoughts would stop torturing me”

I looked at Lorni. She was young, uneducated, and alone. Lorni had no reason to be as talented and as wise as she was. Yet, my power told me she was right. If Silverthroat had something to say to me, than I needed to listen.

I stayed for awhile, trying to help Lorni with her regrets. As I moved to leave, Silverthroat came inside Lorni’s workshop. “You are not responsible, my dragonling.”

Lorni gasped. “It’s Silverthroat. She’s talking to you. You have to listen, Angelika!” Lorni leaned forward, her hand moved as if to stroke the animal’s thick fur. She seemed to change her mind, and slowly pulled her hand backwards.

I closed my eyes for a few moments. I felt the electric power in the earth below me, and attempted to ground myself. I felt Jynx’s strong muscles as he leaned his body against my legs.

Lykie must hear. Lykie need message. Jynx’s thoughts were warm and comforting, unlike his usual direct words.

I opened my eyes. “Hi dad. I miss you!”

Silverthroat’s eyes flashed as a musty smelling mist rose around us. Lurni disappeared from my vision, and then Jynx faded away.

Lykie, where go? Lykie, stop! Silverthroat, me get you!

I focused my power and tried to make my way out of the mist, but I could not. Still, even though my heart thumped harder than a dilly bird pounding its weak beak against a Quilleaf tree, I felt a benign presence in the mist. As the mist became denser, flashes started to dash ahead of me. They were slow and evenly spaced out at first. Then, within glimmers, the flashes circled and became solid. Looking at me with his curly blonde hair blowing in an undetected wind, was my father. My father who had been killed by my grandfather so that he could gain control of me. All because I had magic in me.

I sank to my knees as tears fell uncontrollably from my eyes. My heart ached, yet it danced at the same time.

“Do not cry my small one. I don’t have much time. You need to know that you are not responsible, my dragonling. You are not responsible for the past, you are not responsible for your grandfather’s actions, and you are not responsible for our deaths. You are responsible… only for what you do. And, we are very proud of who you are, and what you have chosen to do.” Dad’s crooked smile lit up his face. He raised one of his rough hands, still cracked and rough from working in the ruins, and ruffled his hair like I remembered him always doing.

“Mom, Toby…”

“In time, my dragonling.” He paused for a few moments. When he began to speak again his voice cracked. “I must go. Remember, sometimes there’s adventure in not knowing the answer.”

He weakly smiled and winked. “Oh… and Angelika, the white one, he’s not as unfeeling as he seems. You may need to remember that.”

The mist swirled even more thickly around it separating my father from me. “Dad, please!” I scrambled forward and tried to grab his vest. I missed, and my hands slid off, but not before a small tattered piece of parch fell to the ground.

I sat on the ground with my hands circling my body, rocking back and forward. The mist swirled and churned, moving from gray to stale green, and finally disappearing, leaving the purply black night sky surrounding me. Jynx leapt towards me. He dropped at nt feet.

Lykie return. Jynx get mist if come again. Lykie good? Jynx’s eyes, which were always hard like metal, had a soft look on them. His strong paw rested on my lap as he nuzzled against me.

“Universal weaver! Angelika, we thought we lost you! I have to get Keefee!” Lorni scrambled towards the mountain before I could speak.

I called back to her. “Lorni… I’m fine. Stop. you don’t need to bother Keefee and Serai.” But Lorni didn’t listen. Either that or she ignored me. At that time I had not yet learned how to read people as I can now, so I didn’t know. I sat there, feeling incredibly alone, tired of all the changes and hardship in my life. At that moment, I wanted to go back to the Echo Chambers and stay there, forever.

Then, Jynx lowered his huge head and gently picked up the package that had fell from my father’s pocket. For you, Lykie?

I reached my trembling hands out and quietly opened the package. In my father’s unorganized, barely legible scrawl was written, “Remember, my dragonling, you’re never alone and lost, you’re just experiencing something new.”

Jynx looked at me just as Silverthroat appeared. As I studied them, for the first time in months, I couldn’t feel the part of me that always felt alone. I’m not saying it was gone. After all, my life up until then had been… well .. challenging, but I had Jynx. And I could hear Keefee, Serai and Lorni yelling to me in loud, fast voices.

“Lyka! We’re coming!” Keefee’s strong baritone was unusually high.

I sighed as I watched Keefee, Serai and Lorni running towards us. Maybe, I thought, maybe Erudus could actually become more than a place to live, maybe it could be come home.

Silverthroat chirped at us, as she scampered through the scree and disappeared behind the tufts of a Zazzymane bush. My father’s presence and voice gone from her.

I felt the familiar pressure of Jynx in my head. “Message done. Lykie must stop following fox now.” He looked towards the bushes. "Silverthroat purpose gone. Jynx eat?

I chuckled. No, Jynx. You must never eat Silverthroat. But, I suspect that once Serai gets here, we’ll be expected back for a star turn snack. She’ll want to watch us, so tomorrow we’ll get a breakrise meal, and long lite snack. We’ll be there all day. Come on! Let’s go meet them.

Although still exhausted, a heaviness was gone from my being, as Jynx and I began following the path.

As Serai came running towards us, I remember Jynx asking, Lykie, are you sure Silverthroat not snack?

Since ancient times there have been gates between the worlds. As time went by, they were forgotten and were thought to be stories that helped to entertain Erudians on those long evenings when the bitter winds blew. No one knew, that the gates were real, still working, and waiting for the right person to rediscover them.

For Angelika Moonglenn, the gate just seemed to appear when she needed it most. It was more than a doorway, it was her chance to escape her life and the only place she had ever known.

Stepping through the gate from Girt, Angelika steps into an unknown world with only her memories, her fear, and the belief that no where could be worse than Girt.

But Erudus is not what she expects. She finds an ancient cave system, inner magic, and a world needing to be saved.

And, for some reason, an opinionated white lynx named Jynx, attaches himself to her.

When the spirit veil began forming in my backyard only a few inhabitants came through. The once that had arrived seemed lonely, so I decided I needed to invite some to inhabit the bushes.

I told each ghost where they could live, but it’s hard to enforce a boundary when spirits can disappear for days. So, they move throughout the shrubs, reappearing where they want, whenever they want.

Spirits, like people, come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are tall, some are skinny, some are alabaster, and some are peach. So, when the spirits came through Earthside, they were not the same.

It’s the same on Erudus. Every spirit has a story, so when they came Earthside, they drifted out of the veil in all shapes imaginable.

Apparently, Angelika says that the ghosts that came through from Erudus, are trying to escape the Celebration of Spirits. Why? No one knows.

The ghosts I added to the Spirit Veil were easy to make. They are not professional by any means, but are homespun, and fill out the display. The first ghost I made was the ghost dog.

Making ghosts had to be one of the easiest projects that I have made for the Earthside Erudus display. I have a heavy dog garden statue that I usually put in the garage for fall. So, I grabbed the statue and some old tea-stained fabric that I had floating around the house.

I draped the fabric around the statue and then secured it to the dog with a zip tie. To cover the zip tie I took some fabric I had left from the spirit gate and covered it.

Finally, I took some plain old duct tape, cut it in irregular circles, and stuck it to the fabric where the eyes and nose would be.

The second ghost was just as easy. I took a tomato cage and zip tied the top together so that it held an old, deflated soccer ball that I found in the garage. Once the ball was in place, I took an old ghost from the dollar store and took out the Styrofoam mask inside it. I placed it on the ball where I wanted the face, securing it with a wooden skewer and a zip tie to the metal frame.

I then took some white fabric and draped it over the ghost. On top of it I took the material from the bought ghost, which had the eyes and mouth, and placed it over the mask.

Finally, I took some more of the iridescent blue cloth and tied it around its neck. This secured the fabric and tied it in with the rest of the display.

The ghosts took me under ten minutes to create. They are definitely not professional, but I like that. When I was a kid, we made our own costumes and art. To me this project is really just a return to memories of my childhood, and the freedom to explore my creativity.

On Erudus, with all the death and destruction that has occurred over the years, it is not surprising that many of the ghosts are frightened. They are drawn back to Erudus during the Celebration of Spirits because they hear familiar voices and see their own world through the veil.

These ghosts seem to need something and, wait forever in the veil, and never go through the light. They will be stuck forever there, longing to be among the living.

When questioned, the spirits don’t know what they need, and Erudians do not know how to help. They often rely on the Moon Guardian for help.

The Moon Guardian, The Spirit Wolf

The Moon Guardian is a spirit wolf that inhabits the Spineback Mountains. She is only seen in October, when the air turns cold, and the veil between the spirit world and the living world thins.

She travels through the gateway into the veil and helps children, and other animals who cannot find their way through the Veil into the light. She stays in the veil as long as needed during October.

When a Twinfull occurs in October, when Astra and Lunara shine above the mountains together, the Moon Guardian can be seen by the Hearthkin. On those nights, the people gather to try to get a glimpse of the Moon Guardian, and those who have lost children or pets during the past year, leave a lantern burning on the mountainside to help the animal find its way.

Angelika stayed over night again, and when she went for a walk this morning, she noticed a flicker by the Veil. She showed me and I have been watching it all day. The light flickers more and remains longer.

Angelika thinks that part of the Sky Shard trail will be coming Earthside soon.

When I awoke one morning last week, the old, unused pergola had moved nearer to the house. I scratched my head as I stared at it. I hadn’t moved it. Over the next few days mist began rising from its base up around it. I could see something awakening and stirring behind. The objects were alabaster, and when they came close to the pergola’s opening, the air felt heavy and unusually still.

When I called Angelika to ask what was going on, Lika and Jynx appeared within minutes. Apparently, although Keefee

and Serai’s temper over the destroyed kitchen had mellowed, Serai’s mother’s had not.

When Angelika arrived, she quickly walked up to the pergola. She lowered her sunglasses, and as she peered into the gate her eyes began to glow purple. She reached forward to touch its shimmering surface, but was pushed back by Jynx.

No Leekie. Trouble! Jynx sat between the pergola and Angelika. When she tried to move around him, he placed his body between the opening and her. His eyes narrowed and his tail began to flick.

“Lika, what’s going on?” I held my breath waiting to see what was going to invade Earthside next.

“The Spirit Veil is coming, Susan.” Lika smiled as if this was the greatest thing that could happen to me. Jynx sunk down closer to the pergola, preventing us from getting close.

When the light from the first stars spiraled and swirled, a hole was tore in the universe. This opening crackled with energy and pulled anything without a physical presence to it.

With the birth of living beings, the opening began to change, as if it was waiting for something. When Trai, the first being died, his soul was not longer grounded to the physical world, and he was sucked into the opening. A filmy barrier appeared and prevented his soul from escaping. Immediately, far on the other side of Trai’s new found home, a bright, mauve light appeared. It oozed with power, and it eased Trai’s pain whenever he went near it. If only Trai had chosen to pass through the light, but he was lost in the Spirit Veil.

Many beings have passed through the veil since then, some are frightening, some are dangerous, some are mischievous, but most are just moving on to the light and their next existence.

Only a few masters have crossed the boundary into the spirit veil and returned. Those who have are forever changed. So, when the Celebration of Spirits occurs, when the boundary between our world and the realm of spirits becomes thin, beware the gateway to the veil.

When I was looking for a way to have the gate appear in my display, I initially wasn’t sure how to do it. There were suggestions of rebar topped with pool noodles, arched branches, plastic poles, and other strange ideas. The answer was waiting on the other side of the house. I had an old pergola which had not been used in a few years. It was not in bad shape, and it was a dark gray so it fit into the moody theme of the display. It was the perfect answer to the gateway to the veil.

I moved the pergola to its new location and then went to my niece’s farm. There I was able to collect birch branches, cat tails, and dried corn stalks. I brought them home and tied them to the pergola for a natural feel.

I then bought some inexpensive, gauzy cloth in the colors of purple and iridescent blue. I hung the fabric in the opening, framed by a small white cloth ghost, and a homemade sign.

Behind the gate I wanted to add shimmer to the flowing cloth. So, behind it I placed a light and a hanging ghost. At night the opening flows with the wind, the color shines down rippling on the fabric, and part of a ghost I had placed behind the opening, can be seen. It looks like something is hiding behind.

Welcome to the Spirit Veil!

Sky Shards have been trying to make it to Earth for several weeks now. While a few have arrived something is preventing more from appearing through the mist.

Occasionally, some come through, but only a few, and sparsely. Before they arrive, their light permeates the area. Jynx showed me some at the front of my house yesterday. Green lights have begun to appear on the pumpkins.

I snorted when he showed the lights to Angelika and said, Invisible sky pebbles. Helpful, Lykie.

Angelika couldn’t disagree with him.

The wisps have arrived, the spirits are haunting the Veil, and the Dragon has appeared in Dragonveil. The sky shards are still flickering and arriving. This should not be happening.

Angelika has not said anything, but it’s clear something has happened to the boundary between the worlds. What else is waiting behind the mist?

Angelika and Jynx appeared at my house before the sun had even risen this morning. Barrow, Spirit and I were awoken by a bang on the window.

“Susan, are you awake? You’ve got to come see.” Angelika gently continued to knock on the glass until I turned the light on.

“She sleep. Sensible occupation. I sleep on deck!” I heard a rustle from the outside.

Barrow and Spirit ran forwards and were already wagging their tales when I got to the door. “Angelika, what are you doing here? It’s the middle of the night!”

Angelika coughed. “Well… Keefee’s mother came for a visit and she’s helping to fix the kitchen. Keefee is not happy. I thought I’d better leave for a couple of days." But, you have to come see what happened.”

Reluctantly, I pulled on my robe and followed Angelika out the gate. “Sky shards have appeared, but they haven’t all seemed to arrive. We’ll talk about them next time.”

I pushed my glasses further up my nose and then tried to peer at the half formed sky shards. But, Angelika was moving too quickly and I scrambled to keep up.

Then I turned the corner and saw her. Emberlyn, a young female dragon, was nestled against the wall of my house with a some of Dragonveil.

Deep across the mountains, near the northern sea, an active volcanic region exists on Erudus. This is the Dragonveil. The area is filled with dark charcoal rocks with veins of silver. The heat is so oppressive that the rocks sometimes pop unexpectedly.

Cracks in the dark stone glow with yellow and orange. They opened to lava that flows across the landscape.

In the shadows, in caves, and on the volcano peaks, dragons of all types and sizes coexist and have lived happily for centuries.

Humans have only lived in the Dragonveil for one thousand years, but their influence has been dramatic.

This week when creating the Dragonveil the largest homemade items were glowing orange and red rocks, Tomorrow’s post will have more about them.

During the Celebration of Spirits dragons have their own ceremony. Dragons have a hive mind. While dragon’s have individual thoughts, any dragon can access any other’s experiences at any time. Consequently, they can see what happens to the others.

During the final days of the Celebration of Spirits, dragons meet at the darkest hour of night, and remember those who have traveled across the veil. They call to those individuals to travel back to the Dragonveil and have a reunion.

Dragons that come back across must leave Erudus when the first rays of the sun hit the highest peaks on the Spinebacks.

The mist continues to rise around my yard. Who knows what will show up next? Subscribe to follow along as Erudus continues to move Earthside.

October - When the Spirits Stir

Serai loves Aurora Wisps even though Keefee finds them to be a nuisance.

When Serai was young, a glowing blue wisp appeared outside her window almost all Emberfall. It was a young Wisp, only as bright as a candle. Serai believed that it was hers, sent to her by her grandmother’s spirit, giving her kisses and wishes.

Serai left her favourite treasures on the window. She gave it a sky shard her father had retrieved from beneath the Mother tree. She placed a feather from a cave bird that she found near the river, and she gave it a tress of her fair hair, convinced the wisp would send it to her grandmother.

The baby wisp took each gift and gave her something each evening in return. It brought two bent buttons that were old and rough. A crumbling black leaf was left for Serai, but blew away on the wind before she could retrieve it. It also left her a piece of toe nail from a Wazzy cat. It was tough, sharp and coarse.

Serai kept these treasures in a golden box under her hammock and looked forward to each new addition. But one evening the wisp was gone, and no more objects appeared.

Serai never forgot her encounter with the wisp. So, unlike the other hearthkin, Serai leaves a lantern by her door, welcoming spirits and Aurora Wisps into her home.

Serai believes she is greeting great friends.

Keefee thinks that there will be trouble.

The wisps that showed up this year, rearranged the house, and ate the pies for the bonfire. One moved Keefee’s chair while he was in it.

And, Serai with a lovely smile said to Keefee, “Look they’re helping!”

Keefee looking at his dinner across the room replied, “One of them is eating my glowytube roots.”

Near door, a wisp smaller than the rest, glowed brightly, listening to Serai’s blessing.

Note:

Keefee thinks she should add, May the wisps leave your home alone.

Serai has rejected the revision.

October has arrived, the mist is lifting, and the Celebration of Spirits has begun.

Something strange has happened to the gate that opens to the 🌙veil.

The Colours of Erudus are enhanced, paths have emerged through the mist and there’s music everywhere.

In the Spineback Mountains, stories are told around nightly bonfires, food is lovingly prepared, and on the last day of October, the dead are remembered with a celebration.

Angelika says it’s a beautiful and perfectly normal autumn.

Jynx sees differently.

The Aurora Wisps have become increasingly destructive, and restless spirits travel around the mountain looking for resolution each night.

As the month peaks, leaves crumple, the air begins to chill, the light deepens, spirits dance in the open, and whispers in the darkness stirs the 13th key.

As Erudus changes, The Wanderer Between Worlds changes too.

The mist continues to open new places, reveals music, and shows magic everywhere.

Beware of what may appear.

Unfortunately, the Celebration of Spirits is affecting me too. Aurora Wisps have settled into my yard, Glow Gourds are glowing brighter every day, and new pieces of Erudus appears.

Each Saturday, Angelika happily examines the changes, telling me how lucky I am.

Jynx is not happy. He’s eaten five Aurora Wisps, and stole the High Imp’s glub already. By the side of the house he stops often to sniff. Who knows what will appear?

Come, join us! This month new traditions, funny images, spirits, and unusual mysteries will appear on these pages.

Be careful! At the month end, spirits will come close, and the 13th key will come into focus. You will be surprised what will happen.

Tonight the celebration begins slowly. Are you ready?

Jynx is being dramatic. I think?

When the Aurora Wasps settled into the bushes I noticed at night there was something else tucked there. They were very dark, but they were definitely something Angelika calls Glow Gourds.

They have the same form and plumpness of pumpkins, but they come in green, purple and blue. They’re mostly blue. And, I forgot, they glow! Not a lot, but Angelika tells me that as the patch grows they will shine even more.

I spent some time trying to replicate a Glow Gourd here on earth. I started with pumpkins, spray paint, glow in the dark paint, and a paint brush.

I placed them beside their Erudian cousins in the Wisp swarm, and watched as Magic transform them. They don’t glow as much as they would on Erudus, and they don’t have the fantastical images as those, but they fit in well.

So well, that like Erudian Glow Gourds, my pumpkins hide in the bushes during the day, and emerge at night.

In daylight I wanted them to look like a piece of Erudian art, at night I want them to become the center of attention. Parts of the Glow Guards awake and glow.

Last Saturday, Angelika and Jynx came to visit so that they kept out of Keefee’s way. Angelika was “helping” and Keefee and Serai’s cook room exploded. Yesterday, just as I was taking Barrow and Spirit for their morning walk, Angelika and Jynx came through Barrow’s hole to visit again. Apparently, the repairs are a little more extensive than anyone thought, and Serai is not happy.

This week, when Angelika came, she brought Moontide flowers and a little company. At least that’s what Jynx thinks.

Explore Erudus

Small blinking lights have started appearing near the bushes at the side of our house. Angelika says that they’re Aurora Wisps, they’ve started a swarm, and already chosen a High Imp.

We went to visit and the High Imp demanded that I build a location for their sky shards, and of course a place for her to sit and watch Earth’s Aurora.

Lexicon

Wisps are tiny, floating supernatural lights that inhabit low areas all over Erudus. The Erudian ancestors say that they are echoes of children who died far too soon, and have remained on Erudus indefinitely.

Aurora Wisps are curious and playful. If they like you they will follow you, sing to you, and light your way in the darkness. Unfortunately, they will steal and hide things, and if they really want something, they will use their magic to enter your mind.

According to Angelika., wisps are brightly coloured. They live together in grass, bushes and trees. Wherever they go they light up areas with their glow, particularly around their swarm home, where the lights are concentrated.

I took several of my outdoor, multi-colour Christmas lights and threaded them through the trees and bushes at the side of the house. I added a few solar bugs, and a small string of green spider lights.

I had some left over tile, so I used some of my acrylic paints to paint these signs.

The Examination

After Dark

As the sun went down in Northwestern Ontario a the bushes on part of my house transformed with light.

AND THAT’S HOW ERUDUS GREW A LITTLE LARGER.

The wisps have settled which means more work for me. They have something called a Glow Pod that looks like a weird pumpkin. So, guess what? I’m painting pumpkins.

Hi everyone,

A couple of days ago, I gave you a short video to give you a glimpse through the Waking Gate to my new YouTube channel. Today the first video is live!

Welcome to the Wanderer Between Worlds on YouTube. ( @WandererBetweenWorlds )

This channel is a way to experience Angelika and Jynx’s journey with visuals and sound. It may surprise you, as it did me, what the journey looks like.

Step through the Waking Gate to YouTube

The first video pictures Angelika fleeing Girt and running through the Cosmic Gate. She falls into the Echo Chambers on Erudus and emerges for the first time out onto the planet. Watch to see what else happens.

Visuals help me see things more clearly, and while I have spent a lot of time trying to imagine what Erudus sounds and looks like, video helps me to visualize where I want to go next.

YouTube gives me a way to open the possibilities of Erudus in movement, voices, music and background noise.

The original commissioned music will occasionally be used. It is in the background today.

In the upcoming videos the channel will wander through Angelika and Jynx’s stories, walk into the communities on Erudus. see strange creatures, and learn about magic. The upcoming Festival of Spirits in October will have surprises, including a little too much screen time for Jynx. He insisted!

Hi everyone,

Much of my live has dealt with computers and I am always exploring new software and new techniques. I wanted to set myself a new challenge to see if I could create a video. It was a steep learning curve, but with the latest software, I found that I could turn my ideas into motion.

I am by no means an expert on video creation and YouTube, and I am very much still I hope you’ll take a chance to view what I have created.

What’s coming next week on Youtube ?

On Saturdays beginning next week, a new video will be posted.

Today Meet Angelika Moonglenn.

October is always a special time of year in Northwestern Ontario. The leaves turn yellow, the nights turn cold, and bonfires fill the air with the smell of char.

On Erudus, the Celebration of Spirits occurs. But this October, something unusual is happening. Before the month approaches, here is a glimpse of what is to come.

👻 Join the Celebration of Spirits 👻

October, Between Worlds - text

When yellow leaves fall on frosty ground
and bonfires rise high beneath the stars,

when Earth remembers the dead
and Erudus celebrates the lifeless,

the spirits awaken.

October is coming.

It brings

stories whispered under the aurora,
ancient legends told by the hearth,
recipes and potions floating through the gate,
and the lore of the celebration
that welcomes those who came before.

Not every whisper will be gentle.

There is an older side to magic.

A darker side.

A side built upon suffering.

And as Hallows Eve approaches,
the spirits may wander near Earth,
close enough for the veil to shudder.

Strange transformations
are happening in the night.

Wisps are dancing.

Sky shard trails are glowing.

Dragons are rising.

The Veil is forming through the mist.

Fragment by fragment,
Erudus is floating Earthside.

The Celebration of Spirits is drawing near.

October is coming, wander carefully.

You’ve wandered through Erudus with stories, and images. You’ve learned about the twin moons Astra and Lunara. You’ve seen the aurora over the Spinebacks, and read Jynx’s guides. But, you could not actually see the articles in action.

I've wanted for a while to show you Erudus moving, and allow you to hear the unique sounds of the world. So, I’ve been working on something new.

Take a look at the 30 second video below!

The video only shows you a glimpse of a new way to wander through Angelika’s world.

I’m starting to put new stories, the characters, nd landscapes into video. I’m adding unique voices and Erudus’ signature music to the film. You’ll journey to some old location, and discover some you haven’t.

Don’t worry Angelika and Jynx will still be there. If Jynx feels like it that is.

The Wanderer Between Worlds’ new YouTube home will be revealed Friday, and Angelika is excited to welcome you to Erudus. I’d ask Jynx what he thinks, but I already have to pay him in meat when he’s on screen. If he gives creative input, I’m in trouble.
