Inking Erudus - Building Vegetation - the Great Forests
Building vegetation in a fantasy world.
Today’s Inking Erudus, is different. I need to build the vegetation for the planet, so taking into consideration where the planet is located, I tried to come up with three of the plants. Below, I describe them.
Where is Erudus located and why would that affect plants life?
Erudus is located on the edge of the Milky Way by a lone sun. The nights are darker because the stars are further apart. It is colder here.
Because the planet is located so far from suns other than its own, the environment is colder, and the surrounding light is bluer than on Earth. Radiation is harsher here and plants have to be tough to survive. Harsh wind and poor soils will also affect how a plant evolves and grows.
The Mother Tree - Mater Resonai
The mother tree is one of the oldest living organisms on the planet. It has adapted over the years to store energy in its limbs and distribute it out to its children. It can survive some radiation.
The mother tree feeds on the energy from the core of the planet. In time of need, it can lose its leaves and regrow coarser, darker, veined leaves, that will convert energy from the few stars in the sky to food.
The mother tree is failing due to the wind disruption in the resonant patterns around it. It is confused about where to lay down its roots so that it can feed. Its backup mechanism, the leaves, is no longer being triggered. Locals do not know why.
The Mother Tree is so well loved that is sacred on Erudus. A culture of magical beings, entrenched in the environment, and old spiritual teachings, lives with the oldest tree. Each year, a week-long festival is held when the tree lets go of its seeds and sends them off to the world.
Magical beings are often drawn to the energy within the tree. The festival has become an attraction to individuals who have mastered more than two keys of magic. It is often a “bucket list” activity to visit the tree during the festival.
The Somber Survivor – Arbor Tenitis
This tree is tall, narrow, and spindly. Its bark is deep ebony, allowing it to absorb the light and radiation from the few stars above. Although it has leaves, they are hard to see. They are straight like a needle. It also feeds of the noise of the world. As the winds have gotten stronger, and louder, the somber survivor has spread widely.
The plants minimal surface, helps it survive strong winds, as it has limited surface area. It can also absorb the wind’s energy as it hits its bark.
Although people respect the tree for its ability to survive, they stay away from it, and teach their children, never to go near it, as underneath, a poisonous flower, The Toxic Beauty, grows.
The Toxic Beauty – Lumen Flos
The toxic beauty is a flower with clustered blooms. It only grows under the toxic survivor.
The plant’s petals are rounded and iridescent. When in full bloom they are blue, violet and silver.
The plant produces a scent that is hard for creatures to ignore. This is how it draws victims to it. Once the plant has been touched, or the wind wisps over it, pollen is sent outwards. Anyone who inhales it will die. There is no cure.
The plant absorbs the nutrients of the dead rotting into the soil around it. Spores are released into these bodies, allowing the plant to reproduce.
Magical beings occasionally have used the poison, in limited doses, to create so predictions can be made. Although, they have adapted a slight tolerance to the plant, the toxicity of the it is so great, this happens rarely, and only when the people are facing disaster. People have died, because they overestimated, the dose of the flower pollen they must ingest to create visions.
