Inking Erudus - Sensory Imagery
World Building Window
Inking Erudus is a new series that looks behind the tools, and techniques that I use and explore for my fantasy tales. Today’s series deals with sensory imagery.
Sensory Imagery:
Sensory imagery is used in writing to make images more vivid. Descriptions include the reader’s five senses and are used to enhance scenes and make immersive experiences. Sensory imagery makes writing more relatable
What Is the Purpose of Sensory Imagery?
By describing a character’s experiences using sensory imagery, an author makes a story more immersive, and pulls the people into the action. The senses allow the reader to have a greater mental picture. It is also essential for evoking emotion, and making the fiction more engrossing.
Types
Visual/Sight. - color, light/dark, shadow, shape - are all types of visual descriptions. For example, purple and pink plumage, violet and pink sunset, round cement statue.
.
Taste. - sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and umami are included in the basic tastes. Textures are also useful. - ex. salty sip of water, sour juice in a glass, square of bitter chocolate
Touch - What a character feels - temperature, texture, softness, etc. - cool sheets, velvety shirt, coarse sand paper
Sound - The way words sound - ex. tiny tough teeth, blue bubble.
Smell - ex. sweet smoke, musky bog, floral bread.
Your Turn.
Write a paragraph and see if you can use each of the five senses in it. Post in the comments if you’d like.
Good-bye for now. Today, I Hope you take the time to re-encounter your senses, and that it helps you to enrich your writing.
