Introducing Angelika Moonglen
Character Sketch
Greetings everyone on this lovely day in March. This winter the windchill was a low of -30 to -40 degrees Celsius at times. Ouch! I’m so glad the weather is getting warmer. Hopefully, spring is on its way!
Since you don’t know much about me yet, I thought I’d begin talking about the characters I create in fantasy. I love to dream up their individual personalities and plot how this affects their experience in their fantastical worlds.
The first thing I do when starting a story is to think about the protagonist. I imagine who she is, what kind of plot I can put her in, and why she would be there. Is this what everyone else does? I find it useful for me.
Angelika Moonglen is the protagonist of the book I am writing. If the novel lands well, I have thoughts for at least four other works. Who knows, right?
Angelika Moonglen - also known as, the Butterfly
Angelika is unlike anyone the people of Erudus have ever known. As the days became colder and darker, she ran through the ancient star gates - no one knew this was possible.
People believe that Angelika is so special that the universe sent her to their world to save them from the war, pain, and destruction that was happening. Angelika laughs at this and says that she escaped her old life and is just trying to do her best each day in her new world. She admits she can perform magic, butt she believes that if people refuse to work with her she cannot help them. She believes that cooperation creates miracles.
Angelika is kind, emphatic, smart, and like a butterfly, has undergone massive transformation and personal growth. As her magical abilities grow, she will master four of the thirteen types of magic known in the universe. Animal magic and sound magic become her specialties.
Angelika loves to laugh, and she absolutely adores music. Her voice is pleasant so she is often invited to concerts. She loves to play the Aioni, (violin-like instrument). Angelica likes fast and foot-stomping music. She may be busy, but pick up an instrument and she is bound to appear.
Angelika is pretty, but does not know it. Because of her horrific childhood, she believes that she is homely, unworthy of love, and is broken. To let another individual into her life is unthinkable. What she needs is one or two good friends who love her unconditionally, so that she can begin to see her worth. As for a relationship with a man, oh my gods, no! Right now it’s just too scary to think about.
Angelika’s gifts are perfect for helping Erudus rebuild itself. But, as with any magic individual. when the universe grants you the ability to tap into the universal flow of magic, it takes away things that others take for granted.
Walking at times for Angelika is a problem. Sure, she “takes out” enraged spirits, destroys demi-gods and catches serial killers, but she does this while falling over her feet multiple times a day. She is a klutz.
Angelika’s falling problem is so bad, that on one occasion, while negotiating a peace treaty between two southern communities, she tripped over a tent pole and sent the whole market place to the ground.
Instead of getting angry, everyone laughed. Everyone knew she didn’t mean to cause problems. Angelika didn’t sprain her ankle, cut herself, or break a bone, so it didn’t bother them. Actually, the incident was just what was needed to relieve the tension between the communities. Sometimes, being klutzy can help.
Angelika’s eyes are a beautiful lavender color. They are mesmerizing and draw people to her. In reality, she has a form of albinism, but only in her eyes. Weird, right?
Bright lights affect Angelika’s vision and cause her eyes to water. She rarely goes anywhere without sun glasses. On several occasions light has caused her to go temporarily blind.
Angelika can’t cook. She can’t even grasp basic recipes. This may seem like a minor problem, but in fact it isn’t. Angelika lives by herself, and travels extensively. When she tries to cook over a fire, or in a local fire room, she is dangerous. She has burnt herself on numerous occasions and set one cook room on fire. Realizing she needed to quit trying, she sentenced herself to eating nuts, seeds, cheese, and anything else that she could find that could be eaten cold.
Angelika is sick of eating this way. This, along with her tendency to forget to eat when she is focusing on a situation, has affected her health, and the people who love her are worried. Feasts pop up when she is around, and almost everyone gives her food to take home. Sometimes, friends deliver baskets filled with delicacies to the base of her mountain home. Angelika loves this. She is always hopeful there will be cookies tucked inside. Sugary, rich, crispy cookies - they’re her thing. If they have flibby nuts a in them - even better.
Angelika has lots of things that she can’t do, but she doesn’t care. Her life’s ambition is to rid the community of evil. She wants to prevent others from undergoing the suffering she faced as a child.
Angelika has a companion named Jynx. He is a wazzie cat ( a large lynx-like animal) who appeared at the junk yard (her home) one day. He is usually lazy, undignified, and difficult. Some people believe that he doesn’t care for Angelika, as he often plays pranks on her. He hides Angelika’s clothes, flips on the cold water when she is bathing, and makes a dash to eat her dinner. He leaves nothing behind - not even a crumb.
In reality, Jynx loves Angelika. He will do almost anything for her. When Angelika is battling magical creatures, or dealing with humans and their politics, Jynx shapeshifts into Bruiser - a supernatural being who is made of pure muscle, sharp teeth and extreme flexibility. He can walk through walls to get to Angelika when she needs him. Want to hurt Angelika? Think again! Jynx, a.k.a. Bruiser, will aim for your throat with his big, sharp teeth. He will clamp down and not let go, until Angelika is safe, or you are dead.
I could talk about this character more, but I just wanted to give you a foundation of what I’m thinking. I haven’t described her horrific past, her appearance, or the plot line of the novel.
I hope you like what you’ve read. What do you think? Please answer the polls, and if you like what you’ve seen, I’d love for you to invite your friends to subscribe.
I’d love for you to contact me with any constructive comments you have. If you answered no to the second poll I would like to know what you think needs changing. Please comment as well.
Stay warm and do whatever gives you joy today. After all, as Angelika believes, you should take time everyday for music and cookies. Life is short. Enjoy it while you can.
