When the spirit veil began forming in my backyard only a few inhabitants came through. The once that had arrived seemed lonely, so I decided I needed to invite some to inhabit the bushes.
I told each ghost where they could live, but it’s hard to enforce a boundary when spirits can disappear for days. So, they move throughout the shrubs, reappearing where they want, whenever they want.
Spirits, like people, come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are tall, some are skinny, some are alabaster, and some are peach. So, when the spirits came through Earthside, they were not the same.
It’s the same on Erudus. Every spirit has a story, so when they came Earthside, they drifted out of the veil in all shapes imaginable.
Apparently, Angelika says that the ghosts that came through from Erudus, are trying to escape the Celebration of Spirits. Why? No one knows.
The ghosts I added to the Spirit Veil were easy to make. They are not professional by any means, but are homespun, and fill out the display. The first ghost I made was the ghost dog.
Making ghosts had to be one of the easiest projects that I have made for the Earthside Erudus display. I have a heavy dog garden statue that I usually put in the garage for fall. So, I grabbed the statue and some old tea-stained fabric that I had floating around the house.
I draped the fabric around the statue and then secured it to the dog with a zip tie. To cover the zip tie I took some fabric I had left from the spirit gate and covered it.
Finally, I took some plain old duct tape, cut it in irregular circles, and stuck it to the fabric where the eyes and nose would be.
The second ghost was just as easy. I took a tomato cage and zip tied the top together so that it held an old, deflated soccer ball that I found in the garage. Once the ball was in place, I took an old ghost from the dollar store and took out the Styrofoam mask inside it. I placed it on the ball where I wanted the face, securing it with a wooden skewer and a zip tie to the metal frame.
I then took some white fabric and draped it over the ghost. On top of it I took the material from the bought ghost, which had the eyes and mouth, and placed it over the mask.
Finally, I took some more of the iridescent blue cloth and tied it around its neck. This secured the fabric and tied it in with the rest of the display.
The ghosts took me under ten minutes to create. They are definitely not professional, but I like that. When I was a kid, we made our own costumes and art. To me this project is really just a return to memories of my childhood, and the freedom to explore my creativity.
On Erudus, with all the death and destruction that has occurred over the years, it is not surprising that many of the ghosts are frightened. They are drawn back to Erudus during the Celebration of Spirits because they hear familiar voices and see their own world through the veil.
These ghosts seem to need something and, wait forever in the veil, and never go through the light. They will be stuck forever there, longing to be among the living.
When questioned, the spirits don’t know what they need, and Erudians do not know how to help. They often rely on the Moon Guardian for help.
The Moon Guardian, The Spirit Wolf
The Moon Guardian is a spirit wolf that inhabits the Spineback Mountains. She is only seen in October, when the air turns cold, and the veil between the spirit world and the living world thins.
She travels through the gateway into the veil and helps children, and other animals who cannot find their way through the Veil into the light. She stays in the veil as long as needed during October.
When a Twinfull occurs in October, when Astra and Lunara shine above the mountains together, the Moon Guardian can be seen by the Hearthkin. On those nights, the people gather to try to get a glimpse of the Moon Guardian, and those who have lost children or pets during the past year, leave a lantern burning on the mountainside to help the animal find its way.
Angelika stayed over night again, and when she went for a walk this morning, she noticed a flicker by the Veil. She showed me and I have been watching it all day. The light flickers more and remains longer.
Angelika thinks that part of the Sky Shard trail will be coming Earthside soon.
