Wildlife in the Quilleaf Forest
For thousands of years creatures have been living and evolving in the forest. The animals have become deeply connected to each other and to the vegetation surrounding them. These animals rely on the canopy tops to camouflage themselves from danger. They belong to the music of the Quilleaf forest as well.
Mossprint Stags
Mossprint Stags are sage green with silver horns and glowing silver moss growing on their backs and horns.
These creatures are a large deer-like animal. They are quiet and calm. The local people consider their presence a sign of good fortune. Wherever they walk small animals follow.
Whisper Lynx
These cats are related to wazzy cats but they have longer ear fur, gleaming green eyes and a dark silver-beige coat. They hide deeply under the forest leaves and walk silently through the trees. Often the animals cannot be seen.
Veil Fox
These fox-like creatures live in the mist and fog. They are hard to find, but when they do appear they appear to lost travelers. They shimmer in the mist with ocean colored tails.
Mimicking Owls
These owls are 2/3 the size of a grown man. They imitate what they hear. It is not unusual for them to sound like voices, trickling water, music or a variety of different animal calls. These birds are legendary and many tales have been told in the forest about them leading people away from danger.
Bark Climbers and Leafy Gliders
Bark Climbers
Tiny six-legged mammals that look like living tree bark. The are hard to see unless you are against the tree.
Bark Climbers eat insects that would otherwise infest and destroy the Mother Tree. Because of this, locals feed and shelter these animals.
Leaf Gliders
These are a form of flying squirrel that lives in the tree canopy. They never reaches the ground unless they are hurt.
Leaf gliders have large sage-green leaves that look like partial leaves. They glide amongst the trees eating insects, small rodents, and small birds.
Calming Frogs
These frogs range from hunter green to sage green. They pull air into their enormous transparent throat and then croak out concentric blue-green glowing rings. These rings hum, and depending upon the individual frog’s size, can create different tones. When more than two frogs are within the same vicinity they create strange “songs”.
Moon Rabbits
These small rabbits have large long-ears. They are silver-white during the day, but at night they turn a blackish-green color that is bioluminescent.
Moon rabbits have developed a toxin on their fur that kills predators. It’s strongest at night when the moon is overhead.
Locals believe that if a moon rabbit is seen under your tree house, you are about to undergo a period of time when you cannot be harmed.
Prism Jays
These bird’s feathers shift in bright colors from cobalt to emerald, silver and violet. They steal magical items and glowing seeds from the Mother Tree. They are then known for hiding these items all over the forest. Strangely enough, the items appear exactly where they are needed.
Aurora Butterflies
These are large butterflies that float on the eddies among the trees. Their large and nearly transparent wings glimmer like small auroras. When many of these butterflies, or rabbles, land on one tree, the tree lights up the night from far away. The rabble for one night acts as one, traveling together throughout the forest. A rabble only happens when the environment of the forest is doing well.
Symbol Dragonflies
These dragonflies are cobalt blue with transparent wings. Their wings glow with markings that resemble symbols on them. The symbols are different for each insect.
When the dragonflies fly together their symbols work together to create words in the sky. While the meaning of the worlds is usually irrelevant to the community, occasionally the dragonflies present a symbol that is prophetic.
Shimmery Hummers
These tiny birds shimmer in gold, silver, sage and cobalt. Their wings travel so quickly that they vibrate the magical flowers, sending the pollen drifting through the air to the other blossoms.
Shimmery Hummers are only seen in the community for a few short glimmers. They then disappear until the seasons change on Erudus.
