The Animals of Erudus - The Quilleaf Forest Region - Segment 2
Creating the Animals in Angelika Moonglenn's Fantastical Universe
Continuing…
This post continues outlining the animals of the Quilleaf forest region.
Hanging Serpents
These are the only native snakes in the Quilleaf Forest. They hide in the branches and hang down like long whips.
Hanging Serpents are harmless to humans but are deadly to small rodents, frogs and squirrels. They are faster than any other creature in the forest and can kill their prey with one snap. Fortunately, the snake does not need much food to survive so the balance of wildlife in the Quilleaf forest remains stable.
Glimmer Beetles
Glimmer Beetles live on and at the base of the Mother Tree. They glow a brilliant sage green, especially when the aurora lights up the night sky.
The beetles hard shells protect the bark of the tree from random damage. When danger is present for the Mother Tree, the beetles form a type of coat that protect her from damage. In return the Mother Tree feeds the beetles with her sticky sap.
Woodland Bears
These bears are large enough that they can be seen for far away. They move very slowly and often sleep beside the oldest trees, sometimes for almost a sol.
Because the bears are often in one location for a long time silver moss and tiny flowers sometimes grow on their backs.
Bloom Wolves
Bloom wolves live in large packs. Flabby skin formations on their backs and shoulders make them look like they have multicolored flowers growing from all parts of their bodies,
These animals are not aggressive and small animals often shelter underneath them and in their sleeping dens. They only turn wild when the forest is at risk.
Eon Tortoise
These tortoises live for hundreds of sols and become the height of a grown man. They are slow moving and their shells collect dirt and seeds that drift on the wind. These seeds often grow giving their shells the look of a ramshackle garden.
Foresight Ravens
Foresight Raves are deep charcoal birds that have silver rippled feathers. They are considered very intelligent and prophetic. They are known to appear several hours before a person’s death and sit outside their window until the person passes into the veil. It is thought that they help the person’s soul navigate their first hours in death.
In times of drought and destruction, Foresight Ravens carry the Mother Tree seeds and hide them until it is safe to return them to the forest.
Guardian Runners
Guardian Runners are squirrels the size of a large dog. They live in the trees, leaping throughout the canopy.
This type of animal has lived in the forest for so long, that it is rumored that when the forest was populated they were the first beings.
The Mother Mantle Stag
The Mother Mantle Stag appears when there is danger to the Mother tree or the Great Mother. There is only one of these stags and it is chosen by the Great Mother when she is first elected to her position.
The animal cannot be heard in the sounds of the forest, and the creature is impossible to find unless it wants to appear.
It includes unique abilities such as:
Healing with its breath.
Seeing into the veil and returning lost souls from the veil.
Guides lost individuals in the Quilleaf forest to the Great Mother.
Oversees the community when the Mother tree seeds are release and drift throughout the Quillleaf Forest..
Can make the great Mother understand what he/she is feeling . She shares her knowledge and concerns.
