Introducing the Spellbound Archives
The Spellbound Archives is a new series that will discuss the world of Erudus. Today’s post is an introduction to magic. In the following weeks, the information on how magic works, the types of magic, and magical organizations will be expanded. Other elements of Erudus, such as creatures, world building, and sound will be explored.
What is magic?
Energy occurs in everything. Planets, space, lakes, vegetation, animals and humans all have their own energy. It even flows through the dust of the universe.
Energy circulates throughout the universe and can be harnessed by people using thirteen types of magic.
Although, scientists are still studying how magic works, they know that energy flows through magical beings brains differently. Magic originally starts unconsciously. It takes practice before the individual learns to master it.

Who gets magic?
While everyone has the chance to learn magic, only those with enhanced areas of the brain, go on to master one of the types of magic. Ordinary people, given enough time and enough resources, can learn light magic, such as producing light or moving small objects.
The ancestors believed, that those who develop an affinity for magic, have “mutations” in their brain. These mutations are passed down through family blood lines. Sometimes, magical abilities will skip generations, but will eventually reappear. These people, due to the restructuring of the brain, tend to have higher than average intelligence.
The mastering of any type of magic comes with consequences. The flow of energy through the body causes physical problems, such as memory loss, rapid aging, and social ineptness. The types of problems vary with the individual. They can be relatively mild or very severe.
If an individual masters more than two keys of magic, they have increased physical and emotional problems. For example, problems with sight, growth, movement, interpersonal relationships, eating, etc. can occur. The constant flow of energy through these people’s bodies is dangerous. To relegate the flow, magical beings undergo rituals to push the energy outwards. Sometimes, this requires the help of other magical beings.
These rituals are misunderstood by most people. They can cause shame. In some cultures, the shame is so problematic that individuals choose to die rather than participate in them.
In future posts of the magic codex I will discuss these rituals.
The Magaus Alliance
Magic individuals have bonded together to create an elite organization. The organization polices magical beings, as well as, comes to the aid of communities struggling with wars, murder and strife. The organization is called the Magaus Alliance.
Although the structure of the Magaus Alliance changes when needed, the following positions are current.
Arch mage (Elon) - the head of the alliance. Mainly in charge of the daily operations of the alliance, discipline, planning, recruiting individuals, and planning for future growth.
Grand Magus (Chaiz aka The Fixer) – The fixer is responsible for discipline, planning and for the individual “Nests”. He has created one team that fixes the worst problems in the universe. He heads and spends most of his time in this unit.
Archon – A rank between Grand Magus and Mage, where the individual aids the Arch Mage and Grand Magus. Duties include planning, policing, and human relations. At the current time, this post is unfilled. The previous Archon was killed in battle and the Magaus Alliance has not yet filled the position.
Mages - heads of the individual nests
Thau Maturge – The top ranked fifteen individuals in the alliance.
Maga (f) Magus (m) – Individual term for a female or male individual with magical powers.
Nests - Individual units of the alliance that oversee policing for a particular area.
The alliance has more divisions and ranks. They will be described in the future.
This was a short introduction to magic. Future posts will go further into detail.
