The Spellbound Archive Series - Type 8 -Spiritual Magic
The Magical World in Angelika Moonglenn's Universe.
Introducing the Spellbound Archives
The Spellbound Archives is a new series that will discuss the world of Erudus. Today’s post is the eighth key of magic. In the following weeks, information on how magic works, the 13 keys, and the Magus Alliance, will be discussed further. Other elements of Erudus, such as creatures, world building, and sound will be explored.
What is Spiritual Magic?
Spiritual magic is the ability to see, communicate with, and in rare cases, the ability to go to the veil of the dead, to aid others.
Spirits, are those individuals who have gone into the veil, but have not crossed the threshold into the light. This is usually due to a lack of realization they are dead, they need to contact someone before they move on, they have unfinished business, or they need to warn others of eminent danger.
While spirits are in the veil, they may come back to the world. There is a limit to how long they can stay in our world. When the spirit’s glow begins to fade, they must return to the veil or they will undergo Evisecom, a process by which they undergo excruciating mental pain, and they feel physical pain in extremities which they no longer have. The spirits essence is not returned to the universe, and everything about them will disappear. Spirits also undergo Evisecom if they have not finished their business in ten sols. If they remain after that time, they will undergo Evisecom as well.
Magas who are adept in spiritual magic, are followed by spirits who repeatedly ask for their help. Because, spiritual mastery is rare, and many spirits ask one maga for their assistance, openings into the veil will often appear close to the masters home.

Who Uses High Elemental Magic?
Angelika Moonglenn - Initially has no powers in the spiritual key, but develops them later. When the powers develop, they come so quickly, that Angelika has problems adapting. Angelika will develop powers so great, that she can travel across the veil.
Elon Stonwich - Co-head of the Magaus Alliance - Elon is a master of this key. When Elon was a young child he was able to see animal spirits. As his powers developed, he began to see humans, especially after his grandmother died. His connection with his grandmother, allowed him to help her move on to the light. It became apparent early that he had advanced gifts. Elon joined the Magaus Alliance when he was a teenager, and worked in several nests. During his service, he was instrumental in stopping a spirit hoard of wild creatures from destroying his home nest. Elon is capable of most tasks in this spiritual key, except for traveling across the veil.
Bryn, Head of the Dragon Ryders - He has very minor powers. He can talk to recently deceased spirits. This has been useful in criminal cases where he often asks, dead individuals, how they were killed.
Keefee Minoth, Mountain Mogul of the Spineback Mountain Region. His powers are only available to him when he is under great stress. During these times he can communicate with spirits, and help them move on.
Limitations and Costs of Spiritual Magic
Newcomers to this key can see spirits, and may learn to talk to them. Unfortunately, since many of the ghosts who remain in the veil are tormented, the spirits lie and try to deceive them. Some of these misrepresentations are pranks, but the consequences of the others can be very serious for newcomers. The individual may be seriously hurt or killed. Newcomers can only stay with spirits for less than one night cycle, or they will go crazy.
Mastery of Spiritual Magic can include going across the veil, and communicating with ghosts. Masters can spend up to a moon cycle with ghosts before their association causes them problems. Problems can vary from sickness, body alteration, physical and mental injury, entrancement to give up their life, or death.
Too much time in the veil will also cause physical problems. The extent of the injury is different with each individual.
Society, Technology and Daily Structures.
Spiritual Magic is more important, on planets and in environments that are closer to the natural world, and choose less technology. Because noise and vibrations are greater in highly technological societies, spirits cannot stay in these locations for long. Consequently, few people in these communities believe in spirits. Those who live in technological societies and are gifted in spiritual magic are often mocked. Magas there often choose to hide their gifts.
In less technological environments, spirits will stay longer. In these locations most people know of someone who has talked to ghosts. Groups of beings, who have gifts in spiritual magic, have been developed to help ghosts move on. On Erudus, this group is called the Guardians.
This was a short introduction to Spiritual magic. The next post will discuss the 9th key, Enchantment.
Tomorrow’s article discusses Queen Penlop, leader of the Pampas region on Erudus. Talk to you then.

Okay, so that was unexpected. I was more intrigued by this type of magic than I thought!
I'm especially interested in Bryn!
"Bryn, Head of the Dragon Ryders - He has very minor powers. He can talk to recently deceased spirits. This has been useful in criminal cases where he often asks, dead individuals, how they were killed."
I want to know more about these criminal cases! Oooooo.
Also, I found the sections: S"Limits and Costs of Magic" and "Society, Technology and Daily Structures," really thought-compelling from a narrative standpoint!
I'm about to read this and see what I can learn from writer, Susan Rader, "From The Great North." ;)
