October - When the Spirits Stir
Serai loves Aurora Wisps even though Keefee finds them to be a nuisance.
When Serai was young, a glowing blue wisp appeared outside her window almost all Emberfall. It was a young Wisp, only as bright as a candle. Serai believed that it was hers, sent to her by her grandmother’s spirit, giving her kisses and wishes.
Serai left her favourite treasures on the window. She gave it a sky shard her father had retrieved from beneath the Mother tree. She placed a feather from a cave bird that she found near the river, and she gave it a tress of her fair hair, convinced the wisp would send it to her grandmother.
The baby wisp took each gift and gave her something each evening in return. It brought two bent buttons that were old and rough. A crumbling black leaf was left for Serai, but blew away on the wind before she could retrieve it. It also left her a piece of toe nail from a Wazzy cat. It was tough, sharp and coarse.
Serai kept these treasures in a golden box under her hammock and looked forward to each new addition. But one evening the wisp was gone, and no more objects appeared.
Serai never forgot her encounter with the wisp. So, unlike the other hearthkin, Serai leaves a lantern by her door, welcoming spirits and Aurora Wisps into her home.
Serai believes she is greeting great friends.
Keefee thinks that there will be trouble.
The wisps that showed up this year, rearranged the house, and ate the pies for the bonfire. One moved Keefee’s chair while he was in it.
And, Serai with a lovely smile said to Keefee, “Look they’re helping!”
Keefee looking at his dinner across the room replied, “One of them is eating my glowytube roots.”
Near door, a wisp smaller than the rest, glowed brightly, listening to Serai’s blessing.
Serai’s Celebration of Spirits Blessing
May light appear in your window.
May Emberfall bring wonder.
May Wisps leave treasure on your hearth.
And may loving spirits find your door.
Note:
Keefee thinks she should add, May the wisps leave your home alone.
Serai has rejected the revision.
