It was Saturday morning and I was cleaning dog toys off the floor, when I heard a whoosh and a bang through the open door to the backyard. My heart pounded as I ran to the door and looked over the railing. Angelika and Jynx had stepped through the gate in Barrow’s hole. Barrow was excitedly licking what looked like cake batter out of Angelika’s face. Jynx flicked his tail as he batted at Spirit who was trying to lick his face.
“Lika, I’m glad you’re here. But, what happened.” I watched as Angelika’s face flushed. She glanced sideways at Jynx, catching his eye.
“Serai’s cook room needs help.” Angelika hesitated. “Only part of it… Keefee says it was an explosion. But, it was only a tiny one.”
RRRPT!
FLLLPPPT!
THHHHRRPPPT!
Jynx’s cobalt eyes narrowed slightly as his one ear angled towards her. His head tilted slightly. He gave her a long look.
Big hole. Was explosion. Need stop cooking.
“Well, I tried to use some magic to make the flibby cookies cook faster. It started a fire and then it blew up.” Angelika lowered her head and fiddled with her long tressses.
Big explosion. Ceiling gone. Jynx flicked his tail, reached out one paw and held Spirit away from him. Spirit pushed against his paw, yipping even more excitedly.
Thank you, Jynx. Ok. the ceiling’s gone, but, in my defense, how was I supposed to know flibby flour would do that. Still, Keefee’s face was purple and he was spluttering, so I thought I’d come for a visit” Angelika smiled as she quickly looked around the yard. “Oh, look you’ve planted another bush.”
“I’m glad you’re here, Angelika….and Jynx of course. Come in and we’ll have a drink. Stay for lunch. I’ll need more details…I have to think of a way to incorporate the explosion into Erudus’ story. Barrow, Spirit, let’s go.” I walked back into the house followed by Barrow, Spirit and Angelika with Jynx casually ambling behind us. He stopped to sniff some lavender petunias, turning up his nose when he was done.
“Don’t worry, Susan. We’ll only be here for one afternoon.”
“What’s new in Erudus, Angelika?” I placed the glass of juice in front of Lika and patted Jynx’s head. He was happily munching on a pound of raw meat he had absconded from the freezer.
“Everyone’s starting to prepare for the Celebration of the Spirits at the end of next month.” The dancing in Angelika’s eyes slowed to a crawl as her smile fell.
“I was supposed to help make ghoul gombs, but I don’t think they’ll let me in the cook room now.” She shrugged. “It’s a celebration of the Spirits of the ancestors returning.”
“We have something called Halloween, it has lights, lanterns, ghost stories, and people try to make the night magical.” I looked at Angelika and squinted. “I’ve been thinking about decorating outside for Halloween, but I didn’t know what to do. What if we brought a little of Erudus here?”
Angelika laughed. “You say the funniest things.”
Jynx stopped looking and stared at me. He gave one flick of his tail.
Susan, no joke. Liked yard. Will miss it.
Hi everyone, it’s Susan again!
Up until Halloween I’m going to try to transform part of my yard into a lit bit of Erudus. I already have a number of good props from previous years including a dragon inflatable, lights, ghosts and skeletons.
I hope to do several murals on canvas drop clots and hang these in different places. It’s incredibly ambitious for an amateur artist like myself, and like Jynx said, it could be an utter disaster.
On Halloween I’ll post a video of my decorations. So, stay tuned to see how it goes.

Hey guys, Angelika says she’s still going home today but it’s getting dark. We’ve organized my Halloween duties, had lunch and dinner, and watched a documentary on dragons. Lika and Jynx are still here and I’m wondering if she might be here a while. That’s ok though, I like their company and Keefee could use a break. Maybe I’ll invite her to stay for a few days.
